Marvin Nelson is originally from the village of Afognak and is an Alaskan Native. After his village was destroyed in the 1964 Good Friday earthquake/tsunami, he and his family relocated to the new village of Port Lions. Marvin's father, Alfred, began taking his son out on the water when he was 5 years old and that is where Marvin has been ever since. Marvin has commericially fished Alaskan waters for salmon, crab, herring and halibut for 30 years. For the past 10 years, Marvin has been a Coast Guard licensed charter captain with Chihuly's Charters out of Ninilchik on the Kenai Peninsula. His wife, Irene, hails from Chicago, Illinois and has been in Alaska since 2001. She has a degree in Paramedical Technology and is a community health aide at the Port Lions Clinic. She and Marvin have two golden retriever kids named Sadie Cove and Tutka Bay.
Now that you have met us, we look forward to meeting you in the 2011 fishing season!
Due to salmon prices collapsing in the early 90's and 30 years of commercial fishing, Marvin felt it was time for a change. With his passion for sport fishing and his love of the ocean, he felt that becoming a charter captain was the best choice for him to be able to stay on the water and share the thrill of sport fishing with others.
After giving thousands of sport fishermen the adventure of a lifetime in the waters of Cook Inlet, Marvin is hoping to bring the same passion and excitement to Port Lions and Kodiak.
We look forward to past and future clients joining us for our new adventures in the waters of Kodiak!
